The aggravation phase of the Jodi Arias trial was set to begin today at 3pm Central time. At approximately 3:25pm, court personnel announced the trial would not continue today but would resume on Wednesday, May 15. No explanation was given by the court. Media speculation is running amok and I'm sure it will be interesting to learn what is really going on. My own speculation is that Jodi is up to some theatrics.
Meanwhile, an emergency vehicle pulled up to the courthouse shortly after the announcement that court would be canceled. It's not yet known whether there's any connection to the Arias trial.
Proceedings in this trial typically start late. I presume Judge Sherry K. Stephens is not overly concerned with the inconvenience to jurors, witnesses, attorneys, families, spectators and press. Because of this, I'm not among her fans (assuming she has any).
6pm Central Update:
- Last night following her interview with KSAZ-TV in Phoenix, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio made the call to put Jodi Arias on suicide protocol in response to her statement she wants the "ultimate freedom" as soon as possible. She is being held in a psych ward in a separate facility. [Jean Casarez, HLN legal correspondant]
- The Arias defense had an ex-parte, sealed hearing today with the judge that we can only assume precipitated cancellation of court today. Trial will not resume until Wednesday, May 15, due to scheduling conflicts with Dr. Kevin Horn. [Beth Karas, HLN legal correspondant]
- Karas also reports Nurmi and Willmott have just filed a motion with the court requesting all victim impact statements be presented on video tape.
